Rachel-BoyceDr. Rachel Powell, DVM

Dr. Rachel Powell earned her veterinary degree from the University of Illinois in 2002. After four years in mixed animal practice in Robinson and Springfield, IL, she decided to focus exclusively on horses, first in an exclusively mobile practice and then as owner of Heartland Equine Health Center. Her areas of interest include sports medicine, dentistry, surgery, and racetrack practice.

Dr. Powell shares a small farm in Springfield with her husband Doug, whom she married in 2016. She competes in Dressage and Endurance Riding with her horses. In her spare time, she also enjoys practicing Ashtanga Yoga and long walks with her dogs — all “pound puppies.”

Nicole-GilbertDr. Nicole Gilbert, DVM

Dr. Nicole Gilbert grew up in the Chicago suburbs and earned her veterinary degree from the University of Illinois in 2011. After working several years at an equine ambulatory and surgical hospital in Hunterdon County NJ, she returned home to IL joining Dr. Powell at HEHC in March 2014. Dr. Gilbert’s areas of interest include emergency and critical care, lameness, ophthalmology, senior horse management and incorporating alternative therapies into general practice.

As a child Dr. Gilbert lived overseas and enjoys international travel. In her spare time Dr. Gilbert likes to garden, trail ride, spend time on the lake and explore the back roads with her fiancé on their motorcycle.

Kim-JonesKim Jones – Office Manager

Kim earned her degree in Animal Science at Southern Illinois University – Carbondale in 2002. After college she worked as an assistant breeding manager at a large Quarter Horse breeding facility in IL and later became the breeding manager at a local Trakehner breeding farm where she first met and worked with Dr. Powell. She joined Heartland Equine Health Center when we expanded into our new clinic in March 2010 as a veterinary assistant. In 2013 she became the office manager and still occasionally helps as a veterinary assistant. Kim and her husband James live in Springfield and own a farm where they keep two horses and a pony. Kim enjoys trail riding and Dressage with her horses. In her spare time she enjoys spoiling her two huskies (both dump dogs), gardening with her husband and spending time with her nieces and nephews.

Carol-RedpathCarol Redpath – Veterinary Assistant

Carol is our newest member to the Heartland Equine team. She comes to us with 14 years experience from a mixed animal practice. This is where she first met and worked with Dr. Rachel Powell.
Carol is a mother of 3, with her youngest leaving for college this year. She lives on a small farm with her 4 horses. She enjoys trail riding, camping and canoeing.
